LAS CRUCES – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte announced today $23 million in USDA’s ReConnect Program investments will bring high-speed broadband internet to thousands of people living in New Mexico’s rural communities.

The following matching grants were awarded by the ReConnect Program:

  • $19.2 million to Eastern New Mexico Rural Telephone Co-op
  • $942,955 to Pueblo of Acoma
  • $3.1 million to Penasco Valley Telephone Co-op, Inc.

This investment will increase e-connectivity, benefitting thousands of households in rural New Mexico.

“Broadband internet access is essential to daily life and economic success in today’s world. Yet many farmers, ranchers and other New Mexicans living outside the metropolitan corridors have yet to fully share in the benefits of the information age,” Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “The state and federal governments have a shared responsibility to end that disparity, so this long-overdue federal investment is a welcome addition to our state broadband program.”

New Mexico Secretary of Agriculture Jeff Witte said the investment will also address life safety matters.

“Many of our state’s farmers and ranchers reside and work in rural areas, and it’s extremely important that they have access to necessary resources for modern communication, as well as for conducting business,” said Witte. “The same goes for consumers in rural areas. It’s vital that we work on getting all New Mexicans access to communication needed for every-day functionality. Broadband access will also help address life safety matters, such as providing telemedicine to our most rural areas where healthcare is often many miles away.”
