Many Bovine Viral Diarrhea persistently infected (BVD PI) positive cattle show no visible symptoms of being infected yet can excrete 10,000,000 virus particles in one day. Economic losses can be from $40-$200 per exposed cow dependent on time of exposure and vaccination program. It is estimated that 0.2-0.4% of cattle are BVD PI carriers. Proven PI negative cattle add value to the herd. Dime-sized ear notches from any age cattle or serum from precolostral calves or calves older than 3 months are the recommended specimens. The cELISA in use has 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity with ear notch samples and 91% sensitivity and 97% specificity with serum samples.
