State Noxious Weed List Update
TO: Noxious Weed Managers
FROM: James Wanstall (NMDA State Noxious Weed Coordinator)
SUBJECT: State Noxious Weed List Updating Procedure
The Director of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture has the authority to select plant species to be listed as noxious weeds under the Noxious Weed Management Act (76-7D-1 to 76-7D-6 NMSA 1978). The plant species selected by the director are published in the form of the Statewide Noxious Weed List. This list is important to cooperative weed management areas as well as federal, state and local weed managers. It allows these entities to allocate fiscal and human resources towards the control of listed noxious weeds.
The current Noxious Weed List was created with the inception of the Noxious Weed Management Act, in 1998. Since then many new noxious weed species have either invaded, or have the potential to invade the state. In order to ensure that the proper resources are dedicated to controlling the invasion and spread of these weed species, the states noxious weed list needs to be updated.
Petitions to add a new plant species to the Statewide Noxious Weed List will be received by the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) until December 29, 2008. Petitions may be submitted by mail or email (see contact information below). Once received, the petitions will be reviewed by the New Mexico Noxious Weed List Advisory Committee using ecological, economic, distribution, impact, and legal status criteria within the State of New Mexico and adjoining states. Following its review of the petitions, The New Mexico Noxious Weed List Advisory Committee will make a recommendation to the Director of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.
The petition for submitting plant species for consideration by the New Mexico Noxious Weed List Advisory Committee is available in Word format (Weed Petition in Word) and portable document format (Weed Petition in pdf). If you have a plant species that you believe should be listed, please fill out the form and submit it to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture for consideration by the New Mexico Weed List Advisory Committee. Thank you for your assistance with this important task.
